1.Who we are and what this covers
This policy explains how the Africa Climate and Energy Nexus (AfCEN) handles personal data in the AfCEN Atlas website, map viewer and app.
It covers visitors to the public site and public maps, newsletter subscribers, people who contact us and account holders.
2.What we collect
Account data: name, email address, password hash, role and workspace.
Map data: the connections you configure, the datasets you upload or link, the maps, layers and versions you create, and the audit trail of actions.
Assistant data: the questions you ask Atlas, its replies and the steps recorded in Activity.
Contact and newsletter data: the details you give us in forms, and your subscription status.
Technical data: session records, browser identifier strings and security logs needed to keep the service safe.
3.How we use it
To provide the platform: authenticate you, run your connections, render and publish your maps, and send the notifications you choose.
To reply to messages and send the newsletter you subscribed to.
To secure the service, investigate misuse and meet legal obligations.
4.AI processing
Atlas processes the maps, datasets and questions in your workspace to answer, navigate and propose changes. Its actions go through the same permission checks and audit as yours, and publication needs a person's approval.
On a public map, the assistant sees only that map's published data.
We do not use your data to train third-party models.
6.Retention
Account data is kept while your account is active. Published map versions and audit records are immutable by design and are retained as part of the audit trail.
You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in every email.
7.Your rights
You can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, or object to its processing, subject to the audit obligations above.
Write to atlas@africacen.org and we will respond within 30 days.
8.Changes
We will post changes on this page and update the date above. Material changes will be announced to account holders by email.
